Guineas!
One thing I've discovered is that when it comes to
guineas people either love them or hate them! We love
them! They ARE noisy..but they are soo much fun to
watch. And they are wonderful eaters of nasty bugs,
esp ticks..and we hate ticks!

We brought our first 4 guineas home in late winter and
placed them in a large dog crate. We knew that if we
turned them all loose they would just take off for parts
unknown. It was important to keep them crated until
they recognized *here* as home.
After 2 weeks in the crate they were ready to be
released but friends advised us to only release one
bird and leave the others caged, that way the released
bird would stay around to be near his buddies. What
they didn't warn me was that guineas are FAST! I
opened the cage door just a little to let one
out..nothing happened.. I nudged the cage a
little..nothing. So I smacked the back of the cage and
whoosh bang out ran 3 guineas lickety-split! I
managed to slam the cage door in the face of number
four. He who hesitates loses buddy!
So there I stood looking at 3 guineas running all over the place and listening to the fourth
complain because he couldn't join them! No way buddy I thought.. as my hostage your all
I've got to keep the other 3 from hitting the road! It was pretty easy to see that I'd never
be able to catch the three escapees so I just watched them exploring and hoped they'd
already learned that this was home! They move around quite a lot, but they didn't want to
get too far from their buddy. Whew!
Mama kitty decided it was her job to come
check out these big birds and see if they
were safe to have around.. or edible! It
didn't take them long to convince her that
they were definitely not edible, though
shes still not sure about how safe they are!
She definitely keeps her distance!
These 4 guineas are pearl guineas, and it was love at first sight for us. We're hoping they
will give us some offspring now that spring is here, but so far they haven't. We do know
that 2 of them are females since they make a very distinctive *buck--wheat* call. Usually
right outside the window late of an evening!
We recently added 24 new guinea keets that we hope
will be the beginnings of our future guinea flock. Next
year we should have keets for sale!

I just love how cute guineas are when they are babies!
