done itching by throwing a little cow

Im getting really sleepy
but this laying down
thing is really hard to
figure out!
You KNOW you wanna
pet me! Put the camera
down and come here!
My mama really loves me and
these humans make great toys!
Life is good!
Dreamy at one week!
Over the years I've often been ask how we go about training our foals because they are so
people oriented and non-spooky. Since I have more time with Dreamy than i have had in
the past I'm going to try to keep a photo journal of her training progress to make it easier to
understand our training methods. I'll try to explain briefly whats going on in each
photo..though of course its hard to put training into words since so much of whats
happening is a conversation between us and the foal using body language.
Dreamy is one week
old now and we are
working on halter
training and handling
her all over.
In these photos Den has Spot on a lead so she can't interfere. We've put Dreamy's halter
on so she knows that its *work* time. He is using advance and retreat to handle her ears
which she doesn't particularly like by scratching where she *does* like and then moving
to the area she doesn't like touched..then back to her *good* spot just before she objects
enough to move away. When shes fairly comfortable with his handling an area that she
was reluctant to let him handle then he will move to her favorite itchy spot and then stop
and walk away. We like to always leave them following us wanting more rather than
with them walking away from us. But lessons with foals should be kept short. We rarely
work with them for more than 15 minutes at a time..though we may work with them a half
dozen times during the day.

Once she was comfortable
being handled pretty much all
over we introduced the brush
by first brushing mama and
then brushing her when she
came over and was curious
about it.
We've found that the more
things introduced early the
more easily new things are
accepted.
